Learn to make hard cover books using the Coptic Stitch binding method. Coptic Stitch Binding is a non adhesive technique that dates back to the 2nd century in Egypt. Using a continuous thread page sections are sewn together resulting in a braided stitching on an exposed spine. This sturdy binding opens completely flat making it the perfect sketchbook!

This class will cover the basic materials and instruction from book artist, Emily Runnerstrom for making a 160 page sketchbook or journal in this method.

Japanese Stab Binding, also called Japanese Four Hole Binding, is a traditional book structure of Japan, China, and Korea with a history that dates from the14th century. This simple sewn book structure an excellent beginner’s book binding technique that can use a variety of papers. While it does not involve specialized tools or expensive materials, this technique produces a sturdy and sophisticated book.
This class will cover the basic materials and instruction from book artist, Emily Runnerstrom for making multiple books in this method.

Make Your Own Sketchbook!

April 13, 1p – 3p

Ages 6 and up. Parent or Guardian must be present. 

Spend a creative afternoon in the Jack Richeson Art Gallery! Children can learn how to make a simple sketchbook from visiting artist, Emily Runnerstrom and then fill their sketchbook with art inspired by the artworks on display in the gallery using provided art materials.
