Alla Prima Portraiture

Instructor: Nathan Brandner
Date: Monday, February 17 & 24
Time: 6P-9P
Fee: $85
Level: Beginner+ (with oil painting experience)

Alla Prima, meaning At Once in Italian, refers to a direct painting method where the artwork is completed in one sitting, using a wet-on-wet painting approach. Richeson School of Art is offering two evening classes in this classic technique. In these classes, students will explore the technique of Alla Prima painting while focusing on the timeless subject of portraiture.

These classes are designed for artists of all levels of experience in portraiture, but knowledge of oil painting processes is strongly recommended as basic oil paint handling will not be covered in class.  Nathan Brandner will teach students the principles and techniques required to paint a compelling portrait in one session. Instruction focus will on achieving realistic skin tones and the nuances of light and shadow—all while embracing the freshness and energy that comes with working in this direct manner. With guidance, students will paint from a live model and leave class with a deeper understanding of portrait painting, an enhanced ability to work under time constraints, and a finished piece that reflects both technical skill and personal expression.

All supplies included.
