In this course, students will learn the fundamentals of working with pastels in outdoor environments. Pastel technique and application in both wet and dry forms will be discussed to create quick notations of the natural world. In addition, students will create small thumbnail studies using viewfinders to prepare compositional variations. This is an excellent class for artists new to plein air as well as those who wish to try pastels during their plein air art adventures.

Mary Beth has participated in plein air competitions and festivals since 2019. Her pastel works created during these events have won multiple awards and have been acquired by collectors throughout the Midwest. She is also a signature member of the Wisconsin Pastel Artists, awards in group exhibitions.

If you like to use an apron or gloves or other protective clothing, please bring them with you. Surfaces and pastels will be provided to all students. However, if you already have plein air art making tools that you are comfortable using (easel, tripod, etc), please feel free to use them during class. If you do not own a plein air easel, one will be provided for your use during class.
